J.W Myers Monumental Masons - Brand Design

Project Overview

I was commissioned by J.W. Myers to create a new brand identity for their memorial headstone business in York. James Myers, building on the heritage of his family’s long-established business I.W. Myers — a respected family undertaker service with over 300 years of history — wanted to branch out with a separate, modern brand while retaining a sense of tradition and trust.

The Brief

The goal of this project was to design a clean, timeless identity that:

  • Paid subtle homage to the family’s heritage.

  • Reflected the dignity and sensitivity of the memorial headstone service.

  • Felt modern and approachable, setting it apart from more traditional competitors while maintaining a sense of respect and professionalism.

The Design Process

To create a logo that captured the essence of the brand, I began by looking at iconic shapes associated with memorial design. The headstone outline stood out as a powerful and simple symbol that could be modernised.

I sketched the outline of a classic headstone, then split the shape down the middle, creating a balanced and symbolic mark that conveys both tradition and a sense of progression — reflecting James’ step into a new chapter of the family business.

The simplicity of the logo ensures versatility, making it suitable for signage, stationery, and digital platforms, while the clean lines help establish an identity that feels contemporary and enduring.

The Result

The final identity for J.W. Myers is elegant, understated, and timeless. It successfully honours the family’s deep history while presenting a modern, professional face for the new business.

This design provides the flexibility to adapt as the business grows, while always remaining respectful to the sensitive nature of the services offered.
